I think what the OP is getting at is whether it's possible for him/ her to be fired subsequent to handing in his/ her notice and hence whether any subsequent reference could state that he/ she was fired or whether, once his/ her resignation has been submitted, any reference must state that he/ she resigned.

I don't know the answer, but I'm sure someone here does - it's an interesting question...!

A sensible person would simply omit this job from their CV. They've given it all of three days so, regardless of whether they are sacked or resign, it's not going to look good to a future employer.

Perhaps not, but it would look even worse when the OP produces a P45 from an employer he/ she has omitted from their CV...

    Hi OP

Is this a student type job (fast food, call centre) or something more responsible/ regulated?

If the former I wouldn't worry about it at all unless you are in a area where its very hard to find work. If the latter (possibly in a bank or care home) you may want more specific advice).

Again, a sensible person wouldn't hand over the P45 - just complete a new starter form.

Perhaps I've missed something, but how does completing a new starter form remove the need for a P45? Also, would a new employer not perhaps be suspicious of a new employee declining to provide a P45...?

The new starter form or starter checklist is a form given to a new employee to complete if they do not provide a P45. This form enables the employer to operate the emergency tax code in most cases until HMRC send details of tax code and any previous pay and tax.

No suspicion would arise it is common for this to happen, they get lost or old employer late sending it out most common reasons.

You just send the form to the tax office then they sort it. Just tick you've been working box. You'll be on emergency tax a bit but it will sort itself out soon enough

If I were in OP's shoes, I would use such a P45 as toilet paper and hand in the previous one to a prospective employer.

The question of whether or not OP is an "idiot" is another kettle of fish though, and would need addressing in isolation to avoid multiple short-term jobs in a row (which makes the toilet paper scenario a bit harder to pull off).

Not had to do that for some time. Nowadays with real time reporting of PAYE you just complete a new starter form.
