Best credit card for a student

Hi, currently a university student!

I would like some advice on the best credit card deals which are more ideal to a student please.
I have a part time job, live away from home so have to pay rent and have a student account with Halifax, and normal account with barclays.

Im a bit confused on the apr and 0% deals etc so would like some advice that.

thank you!

  • I haven't been offered any deals yet, I've been browsing the web. I've gotten a few barclaycard applications come through the post if that means anything? Barclays is the bank which receives my student loan.

Most mainstream banks used to let students have a credit card with a low limit of say £500.
This has now changed - daughter was turned down by Lloyds as she did not earn enough from her part time job to satisfy their salary requirements.
If you have no offers in your Barclays internet banking it may be that they are not willing to lend to you - perhaps ask in a branch?
  • When I was a fresher, I got my first credit card - a Lloyds Air Miles Amex/MC duo. It was a good card and got me used to spending on it to accrue the points and paying off in full every month, a habit I've never broken a few years on.

If you want one because you need to borrow money on top of the support you should be getting for studying then that's the start of a slippery slope!
  • Financially im fine, just wanna start building up my credit, use the card for little things during the month etc :)
