    Are you sure about that?

Every policy I've ever seen always stipulate that there must be a valid insurance policy in place for the vehicle and the car can't be owned (or leased/hired) by you or your partner.

In future, always ask to see their insurance documents to check that they are definitely insured. The reason for this is that while the driver may be the one convicted of driving without insurance, you too could be convicted of permitting the car to be driven in addition to the offence of keeping an uninsured car.
Most I've seen just say a vehicle not owned by you.

Now he's spoken to Aviva to discuss they won't let him drive third party using his existing insurance,

I'm not insured on it yet as for medical reasons I can't currently drive.

Just put it in his name - job jobbed.

If it isnt taxed or insured in your name then you are unfortunately committing offences.

You need to sort this today, even if it's temporary insurance.

    Which insurers was that?
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride

Ownership of the vehicle is confirmed by the bill of sale, which has your name on it. The registered keeper is the address to which all the speeding and parking tickets will be sent...
He will need to retax it after you have changed the name of the registered keeper.
I hope this isn't a newish car, as you will in effect have added an additional keeper, so it will be third hand rather than second hand, if you were the 2nd owner.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

If you have taxed it then carry on - if not then you better tax it now.

The Continuous Insurance rules mean that every vehicle must have its own individual policy covering Third Party risks. So firstly you are committing an offence under that legislation. The offence carries a fine but no endorsement. The vehicle does not have to be driven - simply "keeping" it constitutes the offence.

If your b/f drives your car with the "driving cars not owned by the policyholder" extension he has to (a) ensure that his policy has such an extension (not all do) and (b) ensure it does not stipulate that the car must have its own policy (as above). Many insurers are now adding that as a stipulation to such an extension. If both those conditions are not satisfied not only can he be charged with driving without insurance (minimum 6 points) but you can be charged with permitting him to drive without insurance (minimum 6 points).

How has he insured a car that he does not own? He may be able to insure a car of which he is not the Registered Keeper but he may find it difficult to insure one he does not own.

Most (if not all) of the companies offering temporary insurance will insure cars not owned by you because that's the usual reason for cover - to insure a car that's on loan, or belonging to someone you're visiting.
