Want To Become A Psychotherapist-Where Do I Start?

Hey!

Im currently doing NCFE level 1 in counselling. Only a few weeks left, then will go onto level 2 and so forth!

I was also studying with the OU, but have had to leave early due to very ill health. The points i received from the OU were going to be put towards a undergraduate degree in either Psychology or possibly social Work. You need 360points for this and the course I was doing was giving me 60 points at level 1.

Basically, I feel that I would make a good counsellor. I have had to deal with a lot in my short 30 years and have basically dealt with every possible horrendous thing imaginable

Anyway, I love the thought of becoming a Psychotherapist and helping others in their time of need etc, but am unsure how to go about it. I am thinking of having another go at the level 1 course with the OU (understanding health & social care) in Oct 2005 as they owe me some money and need to put this towards a course in the next 15 months or I will loose it!

What would you do?

Im doing my NCFE counselling training anyway, but need to use up the money OU have of mine, but want to do a course i could take with me if i decided to go to Uni at a later date. Always been interested in Psychology and how the brain works, criminolgy & social work. So need to do a course at OU which would help towards either of these 3 courses if I wanted to further my eduaction later on in either of these subjects.

Have also found a course for Psychotherapy, but dont know if its any good or not? Here is the link & maybe someone can help me:

Im so confused

Thanks in advance.

  • This may not be what you're looking for, but there's a course at the University of Central Lancashire called the Combined Honours Programme, in which you can combine Counselling and Psychotherapy Studies. You need 160 UCAS points to get onto it, but at this late stage in the year, I'm not sure what the availability of the course would be. However, I think you can still apply for UCAS courses up until the 30th June.

Here's some links you might like to take a look at:

UCAS can provide you with thousands of university courses, and you can search for courses that may interest you.

Course Description On The University's Website gives you an overview of the course.

As I said, I don't know if this is what you're looking for, but it's an option that you could possibly look into.

Might be worth looking at a social work degree and seeing if you can specialise after that (you get a bursary for social work degrees remember)

Also worth looking into getting as much experience as possible (eg volunteering for samaritans, saneline etc)
