First Utility - Smart meter shenanigans

Back in May I was thinking of signing up for a First Utility tariff called "Smart First June 2019" - one of the features of this tariff was the free installation of smart meters. After hearing about some of the issues with smart meters I contacted First Utility customer services to ask if the installation was compulsory. They assured me that it's my choice whether I have them installed or not so I decided to go ahead with the transfer (with the intention of not having smart meters).

First Utility emailed me today to insist/demand that I have smart meters installed... "If you do nothing you'll be moved to our default tariff and be charged a £30 per fuel exit fee.". Bit harsh!

So I contacted customer services again and they've passed my complaint over to another team. I'm waiting on their response but they said it could be up to 10 days before they get in touch.

Am I fighting a losing battle here?

Probably fighting a losing battle - to get that tariff, you have to have smart meters installed - think it's in the terms and conditions.
  • British Gas run the same deal . Its their choice to bring in these teaser tariffs and its your choice to look to many cheaper suppliers than Futility to beat them hollow, eg Bulb, Yorkshire Energy etc

The only thing I have in my defense is an email they sent me back in June... "You do not have to have them - this is your own choice but we do have to offer as this is a government scheme to get Smart Meters installed. "

    Still waiting on their response.
