Changing Energy Supplier after moving into a new flat

Hey! First post here after using this website and forum for many years.
I've just moved into a new flat 9 days ago and I know the energy provider I would like to switch to and how to do so.
I'm unsure however in how to deal with the existing supplier: First Utility.
I have pictures of the readings on move-in date and I want to inform them of these meter readings but I am unable to do so without formally signing up to the provider and selecting a tariff.
This would mean signing up to a direct debit with them knowing I'm about to cancel with them as soon as I am able. Direct Debit seems like the only payment option they provide. Is this the right thing to do?
Or should I just initiate the switch straight away and wait for them to reach out to me about what I owe them on leaving them? I just didn't know what tariff I would be charged at then for my brief period with them, or how I get my initial readings to my current provider to ensure I'm being charged the correct amount.

if you are moving you just approach the supplier you wish to use, give them the appropriate dates and readings, They will contact the "current" supplierYou're not your * could have not of * Debt not dept *0

I'm afraid the rules are that you must sign up with the flats existing supplier when you move in, giving them the meter reading/s displayed.
They will send you a 'Welcome Pack' and allocate you an Account No, as soon as you have these you can initiate a Switch to another supplier0
