What jobs can I go for?

My eldest is in school Monday to Friday, she has breakfast club (before school) but no after school club is available. I need to be available to pick her up Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 3pm. All other days and times, including before school is managed by her dad, my ex partner.

I have recently got a place for my youngest into a nursery, her nursery offers breakfast club and after school club into 6pm, Monday to Friday. Her childcare is not the problem, it's my eldest child's childcare that is going to be a problem. She will be in Reception next year.

I am currently on Universal Credit and I am looking to come off that as soon as possible, but I am not sure how I am going to do this.

My first problem is finding a job 5am-1pm or 6am-2pm so that I am able to pick up my eldest from school Mon, Tue and Wed at 3pm.

I can't think of many places that are open or start shifts at 6am...

I can only think of cleaning jobs, I am a trained barista but I don't know of many coffee shop or restaurant chains shifts that start from 5am/6am - there is also the fact that there may be someone else, in the same situation as mine that already has that shift covered.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks

  • Greggs - I know most open later, but from what I know from people who work there they have staff start at 6an to prep for opening so they often do like 6-10 shifts.

Supermarkets - I used to work for ASDA and was contracted to 5x 6-2 shifts a week.

Care - I also have a few friends that do 8-2 in care homes, so ask around and see if they need anyone and not necessarily care work but domestic?

Just a few off the top of my head.

Why do you need to do 8 hours on those days?

Surely it would be more sensible to do 9-1 or 2 on those days?

I am used to 37.5 hours a week, although I have not worked full time in 7 years due to having children

And I have been told by the job centre that I would be £10.00 a week better off if I worked 37.5 hours (full time)

I have applied for Wetherspoons in my area who have some shifts between 2am-5am and 11pm to 6am.

If you went to any care company locally and gave the hours you wanted to work youd have a job by then end of next week (providing you can clear a DBS). Homes tend to be more shift orientated but pay slightly more where as home care can be as variable as you want it.

The issue youll have is theres a good chance youll end up on a zero hours contract so the reliability of having 37.5hrs work isnt going to be there. That said, theres usually always work available.

    Compared to what?

£10 is hardly worth it in the grand scheme.

It is if working would get you off benefits and you don't want to live on benefits.
  • She would spend more then £10 commuting. Plus if I the kid is of sick.... plus school holidays. Not worth £520 a year imo.

Part time might be worth it?

Well, I would look at supermarkets and call centres nearby. They will generally have a fairly large pool of employees so may well take you on with a modified working plan.

    For example:

    Thurs - Sun = 4x 9 hour shifts (32 hours paid) or even 10 hours (36)
    Then 1x 5 hour shift
    Roughly 37-41 hours per week
    + possible overtime

More so given weekends can sometimes be the problematic areas for those companies.

The great thing about the above idea is that you could well do shifts between 8am and 8pm (so fairly reasonable hours).
  • There are some sandwich shops around me that open early and usually finish about 2pm so it maybe an idea.
