Stupid question about council tax

hi guys as the posts suggest this is probably a stupid question. we have bought a new build and have been living there for a month, however i assumed {probably wrongly] that i would just get a council tax letter or bill but it has been a month and have got nothing, tried calling the council but if any of you are part of north somerset council you will realize how useless their phone system is. so is it true they will just send me a bill and i deal with it then? when i try to create an account online and ask to register every flat in my block is there except mine and our next door who moved in the same day as us. could this mean there system has just not been updated yet or do i have to do something else?

sorry again to waste your time.

thanks

Can you not just pop in?

You obviously owe the money, so if nothing else keep putting the rough amount aside so you can pay it when the bill comes thru

Sorry going to rant here: People should always rent before buying, even just 6 months. Living on your own, or as a couple is so far removed from living under someone elses roof!

    Rant over :)

Are you calling the council tax office directly? here's the email: n-somersetctax@liberata.com I typically find council tax departments are fairly responsive.

Also don't forget to register to vote (you must do this), utilities I assume you've already done, driving licence, car insurance and bank change of addresses.

Can't agree with the rent before buying statement. Firstly that means you are lining someone else's pockets as you pay off their mortgage and secondly there are many differences between being a tenant and being a home owner , just as likely to forget council tax for example as a tenant
An answer isn't spam just because you don't like it......

Do you not buy any consumer goods? - afterall you don't want to be lining someone elses pockets...

I'm not sure what's likely about 'forgetting' council tax as a tenant; but in any case it's more about not tying yourself to another person financially for year, unable to liquidate your asset without considerable expense...

That's your opinion, but we went from living with our respective parents straight into buying a house and we are doing just fine! :) Don't assume people aren't capable of doing this.

Yes it is my opinion... or technically my rant...

I'm glad you are, many aren't so lucky. You just have to look on the front page of this sub-forum and there's threads about 'buying out the ex' or 'ex wont sell the property'.

I'm not saying that renting for 6 months would prevent this. But lots of young people are wrapped in cotton wool until well into their mid-20s and then dropped into house ownership whilst lacking very basic skills and knowledge, and without having actually lived independently as a couple.

I'm not telling you what to do, that's not my place. I just believe this is something people 'should' do.

atleast you cant argue im not consistent!: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/5803503/buying-house-with-partner

Have you checked to see it has been banded ? Until it has been banded then the property cannot be charged council tax. The banding is done by the Valuation Office rather than the council.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

I would have bought straight away if i could, especially as my upcoming mortgage is only around £50 more than my rent, and actually paying to our house and not someone elses.
