Interesting that no-one has mentioned Barcelona. OK, not exactly "quiet" but an outstanding destination.

And there are some lovely small towns in the south, with names like Ubuda, Jaen, Ronda, Arcos de la Frontera. Not to mention the tiny town of Cazorla, pleasant and relaxing and the jumping-off point for an exceptional national park.

If you like islands consider Croatia.

Me and the cook had a week on Brac in April last year and loved it. Also had a day trip by ferry from Split to Stari Grad on Hvar last September, and that looked interesting too. All the Adriatic coastline is stunning.

I think though that most resort type hotels are more geared to continentals than the British. I didn't find Croatia particularly good vfm either. Go next door into Bosnia & Herzegovina and the price of everything comes down a lot, and the quality is just the same.

But Croatia is just another part of the EU, where everything seems to have jumped up in price since they joined.

I was going to mention Barcelona..... but only to say that we found Malaga a much more enjoyable city. Less crowded, and very easy to manoeuvre around on foot, with plenty of quality things to do, eat and drink.

Certainly a lot in Nerja when we were there last year, selling fake stuff, and seeing off local traders who all have to pay their rents and taxes.

Nerja, Sitges, Almuncar, Salobrina, Calple. Been to all of them. All are great. Also Tossa de Mar.

You could visit Spain every year for a decade and still only scratch the surface.

Also been to all the Canary Islands.
  • What sort of holiday accommodation are you seeking - hotel or villa etc., and how quiet do you like ?

I was in primary school when I first travelled to Espana (Costa Brava) 60 years ago with parents and relatives and have returned countless times over the years since, to many different areas.

The resorts in southern Andalucia are very nice, as are others listed above on the mainland - or perhaps one of the nicer locations in Mallorca - Santa Eulalia in Ibiza, mentioned above, is a good call.
  • Have you considered Mojacar or Roquetas de mar ?

Another vote for Nerja, we are looking at Roquetas De Mar for our holiday next year, told it is very similar to Nerja.
Have a look at Santa Eulalia in Ibiza
