Ebay account hacked!

I dont use ebay very often maybe one purchase every few months. Dont sell on there anymore either.

Last week I recieved an email from ebay confirming a purchase of a "steam gift card" for nearly £50. Initially I assumed it a scam email so I logged into my ebay account to check. No transactions are showing at all. Just an item I purchased a couple of months ago.

However I noticed my recently viewed items did show this gift card and clicking on the listing shows that I have bought one. I immediately contacted the seller to explain that my account had been hacked and to cancel the order. This was within 20 minuted of the purchasd going through. The seller bluntly said no refunds no returns, item already posted. They have low feedback and only a few month old account. Plus they sound nigerian (they said have a "blessed day" when I said I would get my money back through ebay)

I contacted ebay who told me to dispute the transaction in paypal. However there is no transaction in paypal but my credit card has been debited

I contacted paypal by email last week but no reply yet. I immediately changed passwords, anything else I should do now before deleting my accounts? Anyone know exactly how this has happened?

How it happened is the usual answer, you either have an easily identifiable password or have failed for a phishing email.

You say it came off your credit card, does it still show as a PayPal payment? if so it would seem they couldn't get access to your PayPal so have checked out using your debit card (which must also be hacked ) via a guest checkout, so you need to sort out the password for your bank as well.

Has the seller uploaded any tracking by this order, if not an eBay INR after the last estimated delivery date may be possible, although this may be complicated if item wa intangible, and you may need to check both buyer and seller protection on eBay or wait for someone else to add to this thread who know the rules.

It is unlikely to be the seller who scammed you, that makes no sense at all?

Assuming you have been subject to a full PC or phish hack you will need to go to the techie board and get talked through a deep clean on your pic, and then change all passwords on anything you have used your PC for.

Also, worth phoning PayPal if it does still show as a payment via PayPal to see if they can track it back to put a dispute on it.

Its not a phishing email. Ive not had any suspicious emails recently and i never click on any email links. The password would a combination of letters and numbers, capitals included no words. Its different to all my other passwords.

The payment has come off my credit card not debit card. It doesnt show as a transaction on ebay or paypal. Ebay have given me a transaction ID for it and told me to contact paypal with it which I have. Im waiting for a response from them.

I cant work out how something can be purcahsed through ebay with no purchase history showimg?

Check your email address at https://haveibeenpwned.com/ to see if its been in any recent data breaches.

Also consider turning on 2FA (two factor authentication) on Paypal and Ebay (and Amazon if you have an account).

Ive checked that before. No recent pwnings nothing since last year. And I dont use a standard password for multiple things. I do use 2fa for a few accounts that I use regularly. Ill just close ebay and PayPal. I dont use it often enough to bother with.
