Dealing with my credit!

Ive been hiding from my poor credit situation for the past 2 years, but have now faced upto the fact that they need paying. After phoning my credit card companies and banks to find out my account details and balances I was told by 4 companies that the debts didnt exist anymore. 1 was sold onto a debt collector company and the 2 others had the same balance as 2 years ago. So ive gone from thinking I had 7 debts down to 3. I was wondering if anyone had heard of this happening before.
