Used car purchase - 'discrepancy on mileage'

Hi All,
After a number of years of savings I finally saved enough to purchase my Audi. The car was advertised as 20900 on the clock with full dealer history. It was based at a main Audi dealer.

I travelled down to see the car and we settled on a price. I drove the car back home on the 23rd July. I was just going through the paperwork and spotted the hpi check. This showed that there was a discrepancy in the mileage.........a figure of 91000 DVLA notified followed by Customer (Dealer) of 19900. Not something I expect a main dealer to sell a car with. At no point was this discrepancy communicated to me. Now I understand that this may have been a typo and maybe 91 was entered instead of 19 but I am worried sick that the car might have been clocked back, or that I will have issues selling it on in the future. The MOT and service history just do not tally with the 91000 showing, the car looks great...seats etc do not look like it has travelled 91000. Nevertheless, this figure is recorded with DVLA.

I promptly contacted the dealer this morning to relay my concerns, to which the dealer has contacted hpi (National Mileage Register) to check the erroneous entry of 91000. I have been told to wait a few weeks hopefully they can get this corrected. My 30 day period ends on the 22nd of August and I am extremely anxious.

Please can someone advise on where I stand? If they are unable to rectify the 91000 entry can I return the car for a refund?

Happens all the time. You would notice the difference between a 19k car and a 91k car.

Human error. MOT stations are doing this all over the country every day and causing grief for years to come.

I think you can only have it corrected within a few days.

Just remember, one day it could be you swapping a vehicle in that someone had made a mistake with.

Would you be happy if the dealer decided they didn't want your car even though there was nothing wrong?

You can check back history of MOT to see if its a probable error

  • Thank you, I do not think this was caused by MOT, as I have checked the history. Maybe when the car was transferred to the trader, is more likely.

Does seem to happen quite a bit. My wife's car on its first mot the mileage was put down as 681,637 when you check online not sure where those figures came from but it's only done just over 50k.
