Travel insurance

I am going to Copenhagen for 6 days next month with my partner and my parents. We have booked flights with SAS and accommodation through airbnb. I want travel insurance in case something happens with the flight and it gets cancelled and we cant make it that will cover us for the cost of the accommodation. Will standard cancellation cover be adequate? Also I am paying for all of the accommodation, if something were to go wrong could I claim all of the cost back on my insurance as I am paying for it or would each member of the party need to make a separate claim? I know I am probably over thinking it but better to be safe than sorry!

Only if the "something" was an insured event.
So for example one of the party breaking a leg would be covered as serious illness.
If you fell out then that would not be covered (just an example).0 -
Your insurance policy will only cover your share of any costs you want to claim.
So should you need to claim for unused accommodation (assuming it's covered by your policy) then you would get 25% reimbursed less any excess
Each member of the party needs their own cover to be able to claim0 -
sorry,by something I meant the flight being cancelled0

If the flight was cancelled by the airline (say due to staffing issues) then you'd probably want to re-arrange and the insurance will cover you for the difference. I had this happen once and I got re-imbursed for extra flight, accomodation, parking and petrol costs minus the excesses (each I think).
If you couldn't re-arrange - say all flights were full, then you should be covered for cancellation in that case minus your four excesses (if they apply) provided you have cover for independent arrangements rather than a package.
You might not be covered for strikes (you'd have to read the policy).
You might not be covered for volcanic ash - there might be an optional extra for natural disasters.
Each of the four people needs to be covered.
I am with Insure & Go. I haven't ever had to claim but I'm pleased with the customer service and the cover and they have good ratings.
I don't think you are over-thinking it !!
As you can see it's not straightforward.
The only advice I can give is get a good policy (there are defacto ratings, trust pilot etc) and don't go with the cheapest.0 -
We've done these type of trips loads of times before and never had any problems but this is the first one with my parents and it'd be sods law if something went wrong! Thanks for your help though, I will take a look at insure & go!0

If you are going to Europe or somewhere with a reciprocal health arrangement you should all get EHIC cards.
If you have them check the expiry dates to makes sure they are still valid.
It covers state provided treatment that is necessary until you return home on the same basis as a local.
Your insurance may well expect you to have this and use it.
If you apply make sure you use an official site. You do not need to pay.0
