Garden Rennovation Via Building Company

Hey Guys.
We have just spent about £15k for a garden rennovation for my parents (reduce the maintaince required for old age bla bla bla)
A few cut corners were identified and currently being adressed (the garden has a lot of new planters (70cm x 300cm, 1m x 1m etc), and the builders filled them but didnt provided an internal waterproof membrane etc. They even filled them prior to them being rendered (the renderers have been delayed by about 2 weeks at this point....) Payment in cash etc. I advised that the last 1 or 2 payments are confirmed by reciept on headed paper (fullly prepared to pay for the end of the job but should they pull out then I can flag the company and the MD as a dodgy t#wat)
Dont also want to be in a position where the builder said it was £14k.....then decide because he i being a dodgy tw't its + VAT (the cost should surely include VAT?!)
I would just like advise on how much of a guarantee there is for buillding work of this kind (by legislation).........as the contruction company my parents decided to choose will certainly not offer the same period by choise.....
Many thanks

What does your written quotation from them say in terms of VAT? Have you checked their VAT status? What does their quotation state in terms of guarantees? Surely these are basic questions that you ask before you appoint them, not at the end??!
£15k in cash payments without all this being agreed beforehand is just crazy.0
