eBay and PayPal

Just want to say firstly thank you so much to the people who have helped me so far since I’ve joined the forum - your advice has been invaluable.

A question about eBay - I have an eBay account which is linked to my PayPal account. This has a credit facility that I’ve used so will be included in my list of creditors if I decide to file.

Am I likely to lose my PayPal account and my eBay account? I use the eBay account to sell clothes and other bits and bobs and have built up a lot of good feedback so it’d be a shame to lose it. I guess it’d just be another casualty in this mess however !

Ooh I!!!8217;m guessing you have a working capital loan like me. I honestly think that PayPal will freeze my account once I!!!8217;m bankrupt, although I expect eBay will be ok. I have an eBay business which is being closed prior to bankruptcy, and I have a second PayPal account which I hope I!!!8217;ll still get away with using if I want to use eBay at all. Sorry I can!!!8217;t give you a definitive answer!

You can actually use a merchant account instead of PayPal, for processing card payments. I’m not aware of their fees. It is something to look into maybe..

Actually ignore me. I am talking rubbish! You have to have a PayPal account but customers don!!!8217;t have to pay through PayPal as far as I can see. Sorry!
  • I don’t owe eBay money but I do owe PayPal Credit so they will be listed as one of my creditors. I can’t seem to find out anywhere whether they are likely to close my PayPal account or just remove the credit facility. Or close both my eBay and PayPal accounts down!

Ebay and paypal are no longer part of the same company. Adyen is taking over as the main payments processor for Ebay, and by 2020 paypal will be phased out from Ebay completely.

so no, your ebay account should not be affected nor closed. Paypal will be frozen at the very least.

The Adyen system is seemingly late being rolled out and is delayed in the US so 2020 might be optimistic for a full roll out in the Uk. The original and most of the follow up announcements from eBay have continued to suggest that PayPal will be still acceptable on the site at least until 2023

However, until whatever time we see a new system , If the OPs PayPal account is frozen then they will not be able to sell on eBay. This is as mentioned above- PayPal MUST be offered on all listings apart from those in the motor categories. The OP could still buy on eBay if they chose, but not using a system that gave them any protection unfortunately.

  • Would it be possible to set up a new PayPal account to link to my eBay account (one with no debt) or do you think that would get blocked / frozen too?

you are not permitted to have two personal Paypal accounts, as per their terms and conditions. so best to email/contact them direct and see what they will do regarding bankruptcy and closure of your account.. From what i know, Paypal credit is separate to Paypal. (kinda like owing on Tesco Credit card and they cancel your clubcard if you file for bankruptcy) - happy to be corrected by someone else

but best to contact paypal and ask them direct - 0800 368 7155
