You asked them to do the work so they sent you an invoice so you could see the costs and pay 50% deposit.

You did officially confirm because you contacted them and told them you would like to go with them

I would recommend giving them a call and explaining you are getting a 2nd quote but you will confirm by x date either way. They may have allocated resources to your job and it would be unfair for them not to be able to take on another job in the belief you are employing them.

Alternativelybyou could go down thw route of. "I didnt realise a 50% deposit would need to be paid upfront and will need to wait until pay day on x as we hadnt budgeted for that cost so soon". May buy you some time but if you go elsewhere after misleading them in this way they wont be best pleased.
