Confused about car insurance

Options
Hiya,
I'm new to the forum but a long-time lurker and I was wondering if I could get some advice.

My car insurance renewal is due on 9th August but I'm moving house on 27th August. I've decided to cancel my current policy because the quote they gave me for my new address was WAY too much... but now I'm stuck as to what I should do?

The price I've been given on Confused.com for the current address is absolutely fine; but since I'll be moving out next month I know this is going to change. Therefore I've been going on individual insurer's websites and putting in the details with the new address and it's coming out painfully expensive, the same as my current insurer which I've just cancelled.

Just to test it, I tried Confused.com with the new address and it comes out with great prices... but I know since I'll have only just renewed, the insurance company won't be able to give me the price from comparison sites will they? I know the comparison sites have a discount applied.

Is there any way around this? I'm also aware of the admin fee to change your address with most insurers, which is an added annoyance, but can't do anything about that. I'm more worried about how my premiums will change when I've moved. :(

I doubt I'd be allowed to register the new address right off the bat either as I won't be living there for another month.

Pulling my hair out over this, so any help would be greatly appreciated :wall:

With the policy you just cancelled - were you not able to just keep it running by paying monthly and then cancel when you move house? (For a cancellation fee usually)

If not, you could try getting temporary insurance for the month or two that you'll be staying at your current address? I think Admiral do a temporary insurance but I'm not sure if it's cheap!

Or you may need to take out a new policy at your current address - then cancel it when you know exactly what date you'll be moving to your new address, (if they're going to be too expensive to stay with that is), then just shop around again and get a new policy with a new provider for your new address :)

I hope this makes some sense!

    Thanks for your reply!
I could have just kept it running but the renewal quote for my current address had gone up for no apparent reason (no accidents, nothing changed!) so I'd have probably cancelled it anyway even if I wasn't moving house :( Also, I was trying to avoid having to pay a cancellation fee :o

I'll look into temporary insurance just to cover me until the moving date and see where that leaves me... hopefully it's not extortionate :D

If not, I'll just have to bite the bullet and pay a cancellation fee to change insurer when I move :p

Ah I see! Insurers do have a tendency to up the renewal for no reason. My dad managed to get a renewal off LV this year that was £5 cheaper than last year, he still shopped around anyway and went through a comparison site, he went with the same provider, with exactly the same cover and details and it was £40 cheaper!! Crazy!

Temporary might work out better then if you think about paying a cancellation fee is around £40/£45 ? (I think I paid £45 for mine!) but it all depends on how long you need it for I suppose :)

Hope you have some luck with it!
