Netgear DG834

Options
Hi,

I am looking to puchase the DG834G router and WG11T USB 2 wireless adaptor.

I don't know if my laptop supports USB2. It has USB slots but don't know if this is USB 1 or 2. How can i check?

If my laptop only supports USB1 does the WG11T still work?

Am i better off going for the PCMCIA adaptor instead of USB?

I only have a 2Mb broadband connection. Should i spend the extra and get the DG834GT (108Mbs)?

Thats all my questions for now. Any advice much appreciated!

ps Cheapest i can find is on Broadbandbuyer as they have a 10% sale ending today. Anyone know any where cheaper?

The GT would only affect any LAN - LAN (i.e. computer to computer traffic).

If the machine is limited to USB1 then the adapter would still work but as the bandwidth of USB1 is ~11-12Mbs so it would only be connecting at 11b, rather than 54G or 108. Again this would only affect LAN traffic but it may affect the range (54G is supposed to have a longer range).

Belarc Advisor or Sisoft Sandra may tell you if you have USB2.0

WHat is the laptop? Often the manufacturers website will have the specs including USB1/2.0

If the main reason for the network is to connect to the internet with multiple computers, then the 54Mbs will be ample. Your broadband is only 2Mbs so the network will be much faster than this.

If you plan to transfer a lot of data between the computers, then I would go for the 834GT. The faster network speed will transfer the files twice as quick. This would be the only advantage of the quicker router.
