Hi. I'm not sure which forum to post this in so if I've done wrong please point me in the right direction. .
Can anybody shed any light please???
My daughter 16 has left school and has secured a place at college in September depending if she gets the grades needed. Problem being it doesn't look likely that she will. She needs 4 grades for definite., English and maths isn't a problem as she can resit these along side her course. But if she doesn't get the other two grades she can't do her course. There is no similiar courses for her to do as she will be in the same boat. We have looked into 6th form and a few different apprenticeships and again good grades needed. She gets her grades at the end of August and is supposed to start college a wk and a half later.
I've made 4 different phone calls this morning and spoke to 6 different people at different education departments and asked the question " what happens if she drops out of education and just works"? ??? But nobody can answer the question. Nobody seems to know what the consequences will be. Is anybody or has anybody been in the same situation. ? Thankyou .

Id guess its slightly complicated.
No-one HAS to go to school, unless they've registered for a school. Home schooling is perfectly legal.
That said, you should be plenty of options, not just a levels and apprenticeships, but foundation courses and vocational skills training0 -

What do you mean by "consequences"? How will it impact her job prospects relative to going on at school for another two years?
Who knows? Who can say? If shes keen and adapts to working life then the world is her lobster. If she just slopes about doing the minimum effort, then shes not likely to get very far.
All in her court really0 -
The consequences for myself. I have no doubt that my daughter will throw herself into the working life and get on long just fine doing so. And as a parent i would prefer her to go to college but we just cant see it happening unfortunatly .obviously I know tax credits and child benefit will stop if she's no longer in education but, as they have now got to stop on until there 18. I wondered if I would have any consequences. I know of two other people who's children last year dropped out of education despite the 18 thing and got a job . The parents wasn't impacted in any way. I just wanted to check what the consequences could be. Nobody seems to know.0

There are no consequences for either you or an employer, when the changes were introduced they weren't backed up by any legislation of that sort.
However, the consequences for your daughter of leaving education at 16 with no decent GCSEs are likely to be lifelong so look at lower entry courses that she can do if she doesn't get the grades she needs.0 -
There will be no legal consequences, which I assume you are asking about.
However as a previous poster has said, the real consequences for not leaving school with any decent grades will be a bit of an issue, so would still advise your daughter retakes her exams even if she goes straight into work.0 -
I'd be very surprised if a virtually unqualified school leaver is going to get any job that isn't extremely poorly paid or insecure or both.
The consequences for you are going to be mainly financial, as it's highly unlikely she'll ever afford to move out, or even go out (if she doesn't have a job), so you're going to be supporting her for a good number of years yet.
If she's not going to get the grades this year, can she do re-sits?0 -
Is there no course which is level 2 offered by any college near you. They don't have the same 5 GCSEs at the right grades requirement to get on them. Once you do level 2 you can progress onto level 3.
My eldest went onto a computing level 3 course after GCSEs, but there was very few 16yos on it (FE college), the huge majority were older and had previously been on the level 2 course.0 -
What course is it that she wants to do?
In my experience, despite the entry qualifications being x if your daughter really wants to do the course they are often waived.
I am not saying I agree with it, because unless the course is a real choice/passion for them, often students who have done badly at school and not attained the required exam results, either drop out after a few weeks, have abysmal attendance or are simply not able to cope with the academic demands of the course.
Put simply, colleges need money, students bring in money, they do what needs to be done.0 -

I'm not surprised nobody can answer that question. I looked at it and blinked a bit, wondering what exactly you were trying to find out about. Try ringing round again but ask a much more precise question, so people know if you are asking about child benefits, tax credits, whether she is allowed to do that etc.Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!0
