Hoist for mobility scooter (also s'hand fitters)

Hi all
I've been looking at getting a secondhand Hoist fitted in my Fiat Doblo as hubby has had another heart attack. I've phoned everyone in the area (SE Wales) and no-one is willing to fit - the motability fitting outlets won't fit 2nd hand ones anyway.

I did find a company in Filton, Bristol that sold & installed secondhand units BUT damned if I can find again.

Does anyone know where I can get a hoist that isn't new installed (price preferably too) OR anyone know of a supply & fit used ones?

Seems pretty bad that unless you have a Motability car you are totally out in the cold as to installing a 'nearly new' hoist for under £1300.

  • Yes, they would do EXCEPT for one small problem. NO-ONE will fit a 2nd hand hoist! Until I find someone that will fit one I just can't buy one. All I've spoken to want you to buy a brand new one from themselves & they will fit that for you.

I'm guessing no one will want to fit a 2nd hand hoist simply because they don't know whether the hoist has previously been overloaded or misused. If it goes wrong soon after fitting, you would expect them to put it right.
I recognise it's frustrating for you, but I can see their point of view.
I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say. :)

Have you called all the mobility scooter selling places near you?

They may be more willing to do it than some official Motability places.

BUT the fixings on vehicles and models can differ and, thus, adaptations or replacement parts are required to enable fitting.

It's a bit of a 'closed shop' - things like installation and adjustment manuals are not readily available to us end-users.

I can understand why they won't too, liability and warranties.

One option worth exploring if you can't find a specific hoist fitter is a van fitter/modifier (van van rather than car) work vans have winches and all sorts of things fitted to them and it's the same sort of thing.

Garages are generally wary, rightly, of fitting customer supplied gadgets, especially second hand ones because they're fitting something that they can't guarantee the provenance of

I've thought about hand winches too :rotfl:I've even thought about block & tackles:rotfl:. How did we lift things before electricity? Easily! For the life of me I can't understand how these hoists are SO bleeding extortionate. Why do they have to go into the electrics of the car at all? They have a perfectly good source by just plugging into the battery pack on the scooter or failing that put another battery in the boot to use as their power source.

Were I not so old & decrepit with my brain fogged due to stress:eek: I'd rig something up myself that would work instead of forking out £1,300+ - which I think is just outrageous!

Disabled people - the gift to the unscrupulous that keeps on giving!

Have you seen the price of most furniture etc. aimed at the disabled - outrageous! I bought a pretty expensive real leather riser recliner armchair that 18m in - when the warranty was up the 1 arm fell off. It was secured by 6 screws & some staples into a very poor thin wood. - obsolescence built in as most people steady themselves on the arms before rising. The company didn't want to know - the call out fee to repair was hundreds of pounds so I did it myself. A tenner it cost me & 30mins of my time & it's 10 times stronger than it was when it came to me - truly disgusting!

Thanks for that I will get on that tomorrow unless I can find the Filton, Bristol place. My computer decided to turn itself off just as I was about to ring them.
  • Hi
Have recently gone thru same problems but managed to sort out after lot of research.
Found someone that sold on second hand hoists that were not old, were in good condition and even sold with warranty!

Then managed to find couple of chaps that travel round in a kitted out van fitting used hoists and similar to customers cars. This chap is an experienced fabricator of metal who carries cutting equipment and welding gear. He uses a second hand frame that holds the hoist assembly in place and then makes it fit to your shape of boot/floor pan.
Living east midlands he was quite local to me but said he did travel as long as fuel costs were covered.

End result was a stable safe working hoist system that accommodated my wifes scooter taking all the effort away.

Total cost just over a third of price for both as I bought excellent warranted second hand scooter to match.

Not sure if ok to just add details of if you need to message me, perhaps someone can advise.

Thanks but No unfortunately it's not.:( I've phoned that one & many others in the area but none were willing to help. I have just gone through looking at all garages listed under Filton & many more besides, trying to find the website with no luck.

I'll message you for the details, if that's OK. I KNOW very well how much research you must have done:( I'm still hoping that I just 'come across' the Filton one although I'm almost out of hope on that. Sods' law the day after I have one fitted I'll just stumble across it :rotfl:. If I do find it I'll put it on here. Thanks!!!:A:A:A
