Do we have to pick the keys up on completion day?

Hello,

Just a quick question. Does anybody know if we would we be able to collect the keys for our property the day after completion or would we have to pick them up on the day?

TIA!

You can pick the keys up whenever you want. I would let the EA know.

Who do you wish to hold the keys for you? The estate agent? Solicitor?

If the seller thats quite a big ask.

How do your envision it working?

To the second poster. If your going to be on holiday why not agree a completion date for when you arent away?

There should be no problem collecting the keys the day after completion.

On one occasion, I agreed with the EA that I would collect the keys the day after completion.

On another occasion, I asked the EA to post me the keys after completion. (Maybe that's not ideal, but I weighed up the pros and cons.)

In theory, there are some risks - like for example you can't actually check on completion day that the property is vacated.

I doubt the estate agents will mind holding onto the keys until whenever you can get to them.

You are all assuming the seller is going to leave the keys with the EA. That is certainly a common arrangement, but it is something the buyer and seller must agree.

You could agree for them to be with a neighbour, a solicitor, under the 3rd stone from the left of the back door, or even posted to you.

As for when - well, you become the owner on Completion day so whether you pick up the keys that day, the next (or indeed never!) is up to you.

Of course, if the keys have been left with someone, that someone will probably want to know when to expect you.
