You need LOTS of space and a very well manured patch.
Also keep them very well watered.
Don,t be greedy. Restrict your fruit to one oer Plant.
When a fruit starts to appear, rest it on a piece of slate or wood so that the skin is not directly on the ground where it can be damaged or rot starts to set in.
If you're keeping it for eating, leave outdoors as long as possible for the skin to temper (harden) so it will stay in good condition for longer. They will store for several months in a cool shed or garage if well tempered but beware of of resident mice trying to I
Niblle the skin and 8nsoect regularly for damage.
When finally removing it from the Plant, cut it off with a generous piece of stem remaining so that this dries naturally and doesn,t cause rot at that point on the skin.0 -

Very helpful, thanks
We are also growing pumpkins for the first time this year - for Halloween decorations not for eating - and so far they are doing really well, about twenty coming up nicely. Will do the resting on slate/wood to protect the skin as we have plenty of bothMortgage-free for fourteen years!

Same, growing them for decorations. I'm only growing four plants. They grow SO quickly! The plants start of as these little two leafed things and within a week they're massive.
So far they're pretty big and growing lots of flowers. The weather has been less than good recently so today (after a while of either male or female flowers growing) both had opened at the same time! Unfortunately it's raining loads and no bees around so I did it myself. Fingers crossed!0 -
I grew them last year and got 10 decent sized pumpkins off about 6 plants but this year I've only got one pumpkin from the same number of plants.
I do however have a white powder over all except the newest leaves. I cut the worst leaves off but it continues. My dad thinks its down to the lack of rain this year but I'm not so sure.0 -
