PPI cheque received?

After having surprised success claiming back historic PPI ( ok no life changing amounts but enough to pay a couple of debts off and treat my kids)
I convinced my ex partner and mother of my kids to give it a go as she had nothing to lose, at very worst she would just get nothing. For the sake of 10 minutes of filling forms online she would be a fool not to. Plus I told her if she didn't do it I would go ahead on behalf of her.
So she started the process with her Santander Credit card provided by MBNA.
About 3 weeks later on a Friday she received a letter from MBNA Claims department stating that they had reviewed her complaint and decided that the policy was NOT mis sold. Rather disapointedly she told me on the Friday afternoon and I told her not to worry but appeal the complaint to the financial ombudsmen as I was surprised that she didn't have a case as she had always had a full sick pay policy with her job making PPI pointless.
The following morning she called me back somewhat confused and a bit concerned.
She said she had just received another letter from MBNA saying following our recent letter as discussed here is your cheque enclosed for the amount of £13000
And in the envelope was the cheque .
She is concerned that it maybe a fake cheque or a mistake
Has anyone had similar experience with this or could someone confirm that this is all above board.
I had a similar experience with Barclaycard claiming that because my complaint was from over 6 years back and they didn't keep the records from then so wouldn't be able to calculate what my claim was worth then a month later I received a cheque off them for £2000
And there was no issues with that
But this is a cheque for £13000 .
I presume it's all ok but don't want to get her hopes up to be told it's wrong

No idea whether your cheque is a fake. I recommend you contact the bank for clarification.

I've sent a letter to the CMC stating my intention not to pay and stating my reasons , the main being not ever signing a contract with anyone. Another reason being if I had of requested them to act on my behalf I would've been dissatisfied with them as they failed to find a further 5 policies that have since paid up to me and 2 that are currently in the process of calculating my claims.
That I managed to find.
Consider the fact that the claim they are trying to charge me for was in connection with a Barclays bank account yet they missed my Barclaycard which was worth more than double at over £2000 . That said so far you must admit that they are starting to look slightly incompetent ?
To add I've not received a reply from my complaint yet but only yesterday I received a letter from them thanking me for my enquiry but to process my claim further I need to sign and return all the enclosed documents. All being statements for various creditors to give my consent for the CMC to work on my behalf.
Also looking back through one of the previous demands from them there was a list of their terms and conditions and without going into too much detail but they had failed to comply with quite a few of their own promises.
One concern I do have is that Barclays released information to the CMC regarding a PPI policy and the value which, without my signature giving my permission is a breach of confidentiality and the data protection act . But I did receive a letter at the time the claim was being processed from Barclays stating that they had been approached by a CMC regarding a PPI claim but they couldn't process any further with the CMC as they didn't have correct authorisation from myself .
So there's something definitely not right somewhere.0 -
Just to confirm the cheque for £13000 is real and valid.
When my partner received the first letter from MBNA she read the first line stating that had followed up the complaint but do not feel the policy was mis sold so we will not be making a refund on the account.
Believing that was it and the case closed she didn't bother reading further on through the letter as it went on to say something like...
However although the policy was not mis sold we have over charged you for the policy and we will be refunding based on this. We calculate the refund to be £13000 which you will be receiving a cheque for soon.
I'm guessing they're paying out on the plevin rulings although I've not seen the letters.0 -
A Plevin refund of £13K is unheard of...0

That's what I thought. As I said I've not read the letter myself she told me without reciting from it that it said something along the lines that they can't charge you more PPI than a certain percentage of the total amount of credit . I don't know what the max limit is.

If it's a Plevin refund that is ludicrously high. It sounds more like they were going to do Plevin then changed their mind and refunded the PPI. Plevin payments do not come to £13000 because it's just a refund of commission over 50% and even if commission was 100% that would indicate loans of hundreds of thousands of pounds... Plus Plevin payments are in consultation with the FCA at the moment so it's unlikely they'd pay out nowSam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
