Why not consider motion-activated cameras, rather than leaving something recording for 10 hours? .
Because for that you have to rely on the camera detecting motion which is open to fault. Will it detect or wont it? How close to the object does it need to be to detect? How big does the object need to be? Will it detect a person from my windowsill? Will it detect from the upstairs window (as i may locate it there)? Will it detect an incoming ball but no person? All questions that i have about a motion detector camera that will be solved by a record-all-day camera.
They were out playing football in the road yesterday (nothing wrong with that) but as i'm watching i can see them gradually getting harder & harder and the ball getting higher & higher. One of them absolutely wellied it and i saw it hit the rear window of the car of the house opposite. They simply don't care.
I must admit that i woke up at the weekend quite early only to find the ball behind my car. After wondering why it hadn't been retrieved from the night before i did take a look around and noticed most people appeared to be still in bed which then made me think about taking the ball or bursting the ball. In the end i just kicked it across the other side of the road but only because i didn't want anyone to see me take it. :o

Much of this will be answered at the Arlo website.

The cameras won't detect a ball, as they're infra-red, and are triggered by human or animal bodies. You can adjust the sensitivity to suit your needs. They will detect humans at ground level from upstairs, I can vouch for that.

What will you do with your continuous recordings? Fast-forward through them every night?

A camera to monitor delinquent behaviour by a neighbour's child aged 7-10?

Whatever did we do prior to such technology being available to the general public?

low budget? is free cheap enough? You do have an old phone with a camera, or it you are a sad person like myself that rarely gets phone calls then while charging and sleeeping, you can turn your current phone into a camera.

It may give far better picture and videos than any web cam, even if that phone is 10 years old..... but only the software will work on your version of android, or you may have to reflash you phone to a newer version.

If you do not have a spare phone you most likely will have friends or relatives with a spare phone with a camera on it, but more likely they have a drawer full of phones.

You do not need a sim card to do this either.

probably the easiest is Alfred https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y7h8L2zeLdE
another vid from 2:20 to 6:44 mins https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ua_aRyNSmww

This is the most succinct instructions I have seen, and is nearly complete in general instruction. What is missing is that the ispy should send an email and when it detects movement so you get the alert on your phone and can view it live. Also on movement it is able to run an external command, and also play a sound of your choice - barking dog? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_TlCTR9x3q0

here is one way to make your camera into a webcam and another phone as a receiver

and a more complex way https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8m0uy8V3nw
  • The reason for only recording movement is that trawling through hours of recording is incredibly tedious. Most full home CCTV systems have adjustable sensitivity for detecting movement and most are not infrared (PIR) detection. My Swann system detects blackbirds and cats on the lawn quite easily and would pick up a football. There are some Swann systems with a PIR movement detector built into the camera housing, the idea is to only activate on movement of a warm body - avoiding triggering on rain, bushes moving in the wind, etc. They appear to be quite short range and will not work through glass.

A friend replaced his Swann system with a Floureon one and says it is every bit as good, at a fraction of the cost. I included an eBay item number to one such system in my last post.

If i come home and there's no damage then that would be pointless.

I'm not sure what angle you're coming from i'm afraid.
If you're saying that all small children are innocent and we should let them do whatever they wish then i strongly disagree.
If you think it's good that technology has come on from what we used to have then i would agree with you.
Whatever did we do is a question that can be applied to so many things. Whatever did we do before fast food? Whatever did we do before motor vehicles, before the computer, before the medical advances, before we discovered how bad smoking was for you, before the supermarket, before TV so on & so forth.

If there's been advances in anything that can help us do whatever we want to do then all the better.
