So, why do employees have to use a different entrance to customers/clients? And how have you dealt with new managers who have re-written the rule book?

For the same reason you (hopefully) call the clients Sir or Madam. People are paying to be waited on during their stay, not to socialise with the staff.

    To answer your final question.....

You "deal with the new managers" by doing as you are told unless they actually ask you to do anything unlawful. If you have constructive suggestions as to how the hotel could be improved than you politely put them forward to the managers at an appropriate time.

If that doesn't suit then you try and find a job you would prefer elsewhere.

It!!!8217;s very common for service employees to not use the main entrance. You need to ask the boss for their exact reasoning.

No, you don't need to ask the boss for 'their exact reasoning'. Probably nothing more exciting than something they did in their last job. Just do as you're told - it is hardly an earth shattering request.

His most recent new rule is that employees must use the back entrance of the hotel when they come to work.

This is such a basic characteristic of a customer facing workplace when the option is available.

I wonder what else needs sorting in this 3* hotel that needed a new general manager.

    Several reasons:

    1. Lockers/staff room more likely to be at the back near the back door rather than the main entrance, so quicker/easier to access.

    2. Security - fewer people going through the main entrance/security means they're easier to keep track of by reception and security camera etc.

    3. Less likelihood of talking/gossiping with reception and other staff which would happen if staff walked in the main entrance.

I used to work for a Housing Association and we had a staff entrance too. It never occurred to me that there might be a reason to question it!

You would be more willing to accept your managers instructions if they explained themselves to you? I fear you have misunderstood the employment relationship. You explain yourself to your managers. They need explain nothing.

How people deal with new managers who change the rules depends on what you want out of life. If you want a job next week, you do as you are told. If not, tell them that you only obey instructions when they explain themselves to you so you can decide if you agree or not.

    * Sigh* school holidays...

    Sigh myself.

Managers get nothing for just being a manager, they need to proove they are competant just like anyone else. Common courtesy is to explain therer reasoning. And they will also get my feedback as to why they are wrong if they are. If they are a good manager then they will take this fine. I am always open to resoning why they want to do something someway. No, "Because", is not a reason unless they are five.

I fear you may be talking about the employment relationship in some very bad places to work. Or some very strange sector of the market.

I think you misunderstand what a manager is. A manager can choose to explain themselves, consult, or hold a vote if they wish. That's entirely up to them. But whatever they decide, provided it is a lawful instruction, it is not up to employees to decide that they won't comply unless the reason is explained. If you think it is, you must attend some very strange employment tribunals! Managers prove they are competent to the employer, not to the people they manage. What you are expressing is an opinion about what, in your opinion, makes a good manager. That is not the subject of the OP s post. The OP does as they are told, or faces the consequences - they don't seem to realise that.

It's far from unusual to have a separate 'staff entrance' and that's not restricted to the hotel trade. The general manager has made the decision to reinstate what was probably in place in the past and they don't have to explain their reasons.
  • Put it this way.... if you were to go in the staff door from the very first day, and then the new manager says to go in the front door, you would think it!!!8217;s a bit weird?
