Just been out to check on my spring cabbages and white sprouting broccoli, and remove a few outer leaves that had gone yellow, when all of a sudden thousands of little white fly things suddenly emerged from the centre of the plants!!!

I've never seen anything like these before and can only describe them as little flakes of white ash floating to the ground

Are they harmful and how do I get rid of them? I've got some enviro-mesh I can use, but I don't want to trap any inside the mesh if they're going to spend the winter chomping away at my veggies :(

They are indeed white-fly. They are a nusiance but I have not really ever had crop damage from them. You need to wash your veg really well before you eat it. Soak it in water with a little vinegar for about ten minutes before you wash it again and it should get rid of the little blighters from your dinner anyhow!

Get some of those yellow sticky fly catchers - you can hang them above the plants. My mum uses them in her greenhouse and inside her enviromesh. They are mightily sticky.

There's only sky above the plants, so nothing to hang anything from lol ;)

If they're not going to harm the plants then I'll leave them be as these are young plants to grow over-winter and won't be ready to harvest until next spring/summer.

I've just heard on Gardeners' Question Time that any member of the daisy family will attract whitefly off a plant - specifically mentioned were calendular and feverfew. Basil was also suggested. If you have such a plant which you are willing to sacrifice, move it or them next to your infested plants. Next morning, the white fly should have moved, carefully cover the sacrifical plants so that the flys don't rise up and escape and get rid of the lot.

That's great Seakay, thanks! I do have a basil in my kitchen that I can sacrifice as it's now getting a bit leggy and I have some new ones growing so will give it a go :)
