Wedding dress refund?

My daughter rushed into buying a wedding dress yesterday. It's too big for her. They said that alterations were possible and wouldn't cost much. Upon enquiring it will be in the region of £200 to £300. The dress was £700 on sale. She's save up for a year, just for the dress. She cannot afford to be spending £1000 in total. It doesn't fit her properly at all.

I've asked for a refund as it was only bought yesterday. I've said they can keep some of the money from the dress, another no. I've asked for a credit note to see if they would be agreeable to that and to see if they would cooperate in any way at all, again no. They said they had a number of a seamstress who takes up the hems on dresses for £20, I spoke to her and she said it would cost starting price £80 up to £150. If its more difficult it would cost more.

Is there any way to get a refund and is she within her rights to ask for one as it's been less than 24 hours from buying it and no adjustments have been made and is off the rack dress, not ordered in.

She has issues with impulsivity due to her illness. I feel they've taken advantage of her, especially when speaking to them.

I couldn't go with her as I'm not well, so I couldn't guide her.

I think I would press them to agree to an exchange for another dress which fits.
I don't like blackmail, but if the shop has a social media presence then I might suggest the shop be made aware how damaging a true review of their trading policy and its application in your daughter's case might be.

In view of your daughters impulsiveness, maybe suggest a good trusted friend accompany her to any big price ticket shopping....
I sincerely hope you get this resolved amicably.

You advocate blackmailing a company when they play by the law? Wow. Talk about dirty fighting.

Their trading policy appears to be in line with the law. It just doesn't align with what you think the law should be.

If your daughter is capable of getting married she should be capable of understanding the basis upon which the sale was made.

The majority of wedding dresses bought will need some sort of alteration. If she loves the dress then shop around for for a seamstress, it does not need to be done at the same place the dress was bought.
  • The problem I have is that they said it wouldn't cost much to alter. The alterations will be hundreds of pounds. She is a size 6 and the dress a size 12. It would need to be taken apart and then be cut and re stitched. She was mislead into how much alterations would be. They weren't honest with her. Unfortunaly she cannot help how her mind works and she cannot think properly and cannot understand concequesnces. Yes she may be old enough to get married, I cannot stop her at the age of 20! It's not about being capable.
  • We have shopped around but where we live I'm there are not many seamstresses so they can charge what they want to. They don't have their own. The maximum it could be is £400 because of the design of the dress. I'm just looking for advice, what they are saying doesn't seem very fair considering it was bought less than 24 hours ago. They really pushed the dress onto her.

Why on earth if she is size 6 was she trying on a dress size 12?
Did you DD not relise that it would need altering? and there would be a cost

  • There weren't any size 6 as no one is a size 6 apparently. She can even be a size 4

Unfortunately I don't think there is anything that can be done with regards the shop, unless the dress is faulty they are not obliged to accept a return.

What was said about the cost of the alterations is not going to be proved either way as it is their word against your daughters so going down the small claims route is not an avenue to consider.

I guess your daughter is left with either trying to find the extra for the alterations, maybe some savings could be made elsewhere from the wedding budget or sell the dress on facebook etc. She may well have to take a hit on the price though as although unworn people will view it as second hand.

Have you been in the shop with your daughter and spoken to the owners? Perhaps a compromise can be reached and I think it always better done face to face as long as everyone can keep it on friendly terms.
