Together we can cut petrol prices!!!!!!

I recieved a bulletin on 'my space' with this strong idea of how to cut petrol prices.

Rather than choosing a day not to buy fuel which has very little impact anyway, choose a petrol supplier giant of whom to boycot.

It is already going around 'my space' that we should all boycot 'Esso' and 'BP'

With BP/Esso losing profits they will be forced to lower their fuel prices and will empahasise the fact that consumers are not happy with having to pay the highest price for fuel in the whole of the world.

People really do have the power and we should use it. If we all pass this theory on to our friends and succesfully convince them to go ahead with the boycot we will quickly make a huge impact, and BP/Esso bosses will be forced to appeal to the goverment to lower the fuel tax.

I as one will go ahead with the boycot to see if it makes a difference, it's worth a try but we need to convince our friends.

That is absolute nonsense. The key in your text is the word 'giant', do you think that a few people refusing to buy from them will make even a dent in their profits? No.

In fact they are more likely to increase their prices to recoup any lost revenue from those who are still using their services.

Back to the drawing board ...
    Gone ... or have I?

This wont work. Its been posted many times now a nothing changes. Its just another email kicking around sent from one person to another
  • Perhaps you are right, but if everybody who ever received this 'email that is kicking about' actually gave it a shot then maybe it could make a difference. Of course if only a handful of people give it a shot it will make absolutely no difference. The internet can be quite a powerful tool these days, but yeah, maybe i'm a little naive to believe it would make a difference but its harm for me to give it a shot as it will make no difference as supermarkets are genrally cheaper anyway. Personally I think if we all tried it and mentioned it to our friends, the idea would spiral. But perhaps people arent really that interested. I dunno....................

Please see multiple previous threads to explain why this wouldn't work. It's nothing to do with how many people receive the e-mail or indeed act on it. It's just a chain letter that clogs up peoples in-boxes.

so i take it from the replies so far that everyone is happy to pay £1.08 for a litre of diesel ?

    Perhaps you are right,.......

No 'perhaps' about it. Most of the cost of fuel (see previous threads) goes to the Government in taxes. The cost of 'crude oil' is going up, so petrol Conpanies pass on this increased cost onto us, the consumer....which suits the Government as it gets a percentage & therefore more money. Look at the figures & decide who is screwing us. As an example I was in Crete (not known for being an oil rich country) 5 years ago & petrol prices were 2/3 of what they were in the UK....guess where the other 1/3 was going?

where did you read that in anyone's reply?

I was just stating that this idea wouldn't work, not that I'm happy with the price. Crude is $95, a record high, diesel is correspondingly at a record high.

A vast majority of the cost is tax. If you want the price reduced, the tax setters need to be your target.

Nope....but the oil/petrol Companies aren't the problem, it's the taxation.

I think that if they reduced the tax then the petrol companies would increase the price to bring it back up to where it was before the tax cut.

People pay £1 a litre, the goverment reduces the tax by 20p, bring the cost down to 80p. The petrol companies increase it to £1 again and the government finds another way of getting all those 20p per litre back from us again. Maybe stick it on alcohol or increase VAT a little.
