new underlay or not

Hi,

My husband and I moved into a new build property in December and are looking to redecorate. Nothing wrong with the way it is now, they were just built with the basic cheap carpets etc.
We want to start by replacing the bedroom carpet and as it is only 7 months old do we really need to buy new underlay or can you just put the new carpet down???

Any help is appreciated!

I don't see why you couldn't keep the existing underlay if you want to !!! long at it isn't damaged. I imagine that if the existing carpet was cheap, the underlay will probably be the cheap as well.

If you were you I would ask myself, if there were no carpet down and you were getting it installed with carpet that you want would you go for the cheapest underlay? If so new underlay and 7 month old underlayer are effectively the same so I wouldn't replace it. If I wouldn't in those circumstances go for the cheapest underlay with my new carpet I would get new underlay as well.

Well if the house was specced with the cheapest carpets, it'll no doubt have the cheapest underlay too. No need to change it if you don't want to spend, but you'll certainly get a more 'luxury' feel underfoot from a quality underlay. It does make a difference.
  • You can get 11mm Cloud 9 underlay online for around £3.30 a square metre delivered, if going to the trouble of taking up the carpet then for such a small extra cost I'd replace the underlay as well.

A lot cheaper to get the underlay mentioned above online and put it down yourself than to get one of the larger retailers to put it down for you. They charge over £8 a sq metre for 11mm underlay.
