Rule of thumb: if it's an Audi, actual cost x 100 or so. Think how impressed strangers will be by you, your car and your image.

If it's not some Nazi staff car, then see previous replies.

    Give it a rest.

what made you so bitter about Audi owners?
Was it the husband/wife/dog/cat thing or did one pinch your favourite parking space?

It was an accident but the liability is on my side and the car is too old in any case to be anything else but an insurance write off even though mechanically it is in excellent condition.

The other guy was more than reasonable and his car had only minor damage, hence a low cost settlement. It’s a matter for me of weighing up the pros and cons of a car owned from new with no defects and low mileage or looking for another second hand car. I may well look for another car but I want time to do it and this car is fine apart from the bodywork.

Yep, you are all gradually teasing the story out of me .... :)

Just to say I managed to get the car the roadworthy again. I sourced a tailgate through an algorithm on the internet (silver rather grey but an almost-match). Through the recommendation of someone at a workshop which didn't fit tailgates itself, I found a decent chap who fitted the tailgate for £200. A fuse and connection also seemed to have blown/popped out leaving the left side light and headlight, digital display and radio unusuable. However he put me in touch with a automotive electrician who fixed it for £80. Both commented for an old car without power steering, it is in great condition, so I feel I've got away relatively lightly with only the plastic cover above the wheel hub inside the boot beyond repair (anybody know what the technical name for it is - just in case I can do something about it?). Thanks for your answers as it gave me confidence in an area I feel distinctly inexperienced about, although I am thankful to have found two people who understood what was needed and why and did a good job. :)
