Carpets - length vs width

Hi All,

I currently have a carpet remnant in my basket from an online retailer, which measures 4m x 5m, there is the exact same carpet at a cheaper price measuring 5m x 4m. These are to be cut between the stairs, landing and hallway. (I've worked out the the joins are on the steps, no matter which way we go) It's a wool blend Axminster.

Is there any problem in buying the carpet and fitting it "the other way", as such?

Yes, there is a problem. The pile won't look right if you rotate sections by 90° (or even 180° after wear and rub).

The pile should be installed with greatest direction of movement (I think it's that way round), so one really ought to sometimes waste a huge quantity for getting the best results. Doesn't tend to matter with quite a lot of modern carpet.

Having said that, if the joins are in "clever" places, and if you save a lot of cash, it might be worth it.
