My Lady Wife has discovered she likes those cans of ready-mixed Gordon's gin and Schweppes Tonic, but we don't want to keep paying over the odds for a G&T when we're quite capable of making one ourselves - or would be if we knew how much tonic you need to how much gin. Can any G&T drinkers please advise what sort of ratio one wants to be to t'other?
Also, are any of the budget gins anything like Gordon's, or are we better off sticking to that?

I usually for 1 part gin to 4 parts tonic.
I prefer the more expensive gin, so can't really comment on the budget gin though a lot of my friends enjoy Bombay Sapphire?Dwy galon, un dyhead,

I love a G&T and regularly buy Aldi's own brand Oliver Cromwell gin, it's almost identical to Gordon's and cheaper at £9.99 for 75cl or £14.99 for 1ltr.
Gin is massive at the moment and there are loads to try
A 25ml measure is a standard in Uk, and as for tonic, that's to taste but approx 150ml is what you would get served at the bar
I like mine with ice and a curl of cucumber sliced lengthwise with a potato peeler, but there are millions of options

I'm a very recent convert to a g&t and I would say it's just best to experiment and see what you prefer. Maybe there's some recipe to make the perfect gin but for me a I just keep adding and tasting until I get the right balance for me. I've only tried a couple of gins. One was called fintons which was nice enough and now Ive got a bottle of hortus citrus summer edition from lidl which is lovely. I tried a Schweppes tonic water with elderflower which was OK but I found i actually preferred the asda with a twist of lemon which was a third of the price. I might just have cheap tastes!0

As I only have the occasional gin, I think tonic is a very important part of the drink.
A friend bought us a gin tasting kit with 4 premium gins and 4 Fevertree tonics, all different tastes and matched with the gin.
It's not cheap but does taste (imho) much nicer than cheaper tonics.
There are a number of different flavours.
I don't like Fentiman's tonic (available in Wethespoons at an uplifted price).
I like Tanqueray gin, Tanqueray 10 and Tanqueray Rangpur.
- just noticed that they also do aTanqueray Flor de Sevilla is a unique distilled gin made with bittersweet Seville oranges, orange blossom, natural colour and flavours as well as other fine botanicals
I believe that different gins should have different accompaniments but I don't like the taste of cucumber. I have a stock of sliced frozen limes in the freezer.
Adnans Copperhouse gin is very nice too.0 -
The make or break for me with gin is the tonic, I prefer the small 150ml cans as they stay fresh so no risk of it going stale or flat as one is perfect for a drink for me. Fevertree is very good and I like good old schweppes as well. Gin wise I'm happy with most though Hendricks is my favourite. For my birthday I was given a bottle of seaweed gin which is really lovely with elderflower tonic, lots of ice & sliced lemon.0

If you know anyone going to Spain for their holidays you can get 1 litre of Gordons for around 9 Euros in the supermarkets - it's in a plastic bottle so not too heavy.
You can get Larios gin there even cheaper (I recommend the Larios red gin - very fruity)0 -
We use a good old fashioned bar measure - 50ml gin with 150ml tonic. Add several ice-cubes to a large glass, also add slice of frozen lemon/lime/grapefruit according to whichever gin you choose. Keep your tonic in the fridge too
