Travelling with wifes passport in maiden name - help

Hi,

Problem - We got married in Vegas late Sept, but before this I booked a trip to Amsterdam for November and booked it as Mr & Mrs presuming that a month would be long enough to change my partners passport over to my surname.

However we have yet to recieve our certified wedding certificate from Clark County, the track+trace simply states that is in the US. So therefore my other half will be travelling with a passport in her maiden name, I have spoken to the airline and they have infromed me that as long as I have a marriage certificate at check in she will be ok to travel on her passport. Thing is, obviously we haven't got our certificate as yet.. so the only option would be to cancel the flight and rebook in new names.
BUT - we do have a marriage certificate from the chapel that's not certified, is it worth chancing it with this?

  • Why can't she just travel in her maiden name? I did that on a recent trip to spain even though I got married 2 years ago. My new passport came just before we flew out to get married in Jamaica and we've not been able to afford a new one yet. As long as you give them both the names it shouldn't be a problem.

  • The airline will not allow her to fly due to the booking and her passport having a different surname - her maiden name. She can fly if we produce a marriage certificate but as yet it's not arrived.
I thought it wouldn't be an issue so rang the airline to check and apparantly it is. Doh.

Your going to have to bite the bullet i'm afraid and contact the airline and do a name change. Change your wife's name back to her maiden name. The only problem is they usually charge you the difference between the price you booked at and the current market price for the seat. So the quicker you react, the cheaper it will be. Good Luck!

I agree with woofek. The sooner the better.

It wasn't a problem years ago, pre '911'. Heck - I can member getting the wife into the States on her old/maiden name passport. And they allowed me to sit in the cockpit jump-seat for the return landing at Manchester. The good old days, eh??

Yes unfortunately its the case that the name on the passport must match the name on the ticket (tho it doesn't matter which name this is). And whilst some airlines do accept passport in maiden name + marriage certificate, be warned that not all of them do.

And its not just the airlines you have to worry about....some countries will accept it at immigration and some won't...and seeing as on arrival they don't usually check you passport against your ticket you may end up in the situation that you have got into the country no problems but when travelling home you experience problems when they check your boarding pass against your passport and find the names different.

You do know that this is not a legal document - it is a momento certificate (I have one too). It would be a big risk, although it does look official. Personally I wouldn't chance it.

I have sent you a private message.
  • Cheers everyone, Steve thanks for the pm.

In a moment of desperation we called at the airport with our 'certificate', passports and flight details to see if we could do a name change at the airline desk. The staff at the desk were very helpful, changed my partners name free of charge but did advise in bringing our certificate with us just to clarify our postion on the return journey.
And, as luck would have it the Track and Trace on the certified certificate is indicating that it's back in the UK :D Don't you just love it when a plan comes together.
