Calls to HMRC Glasgow charged at 45p per minute - Total rip off

Just realised I was charged 45p per minute to call HMRC Glasgow the other day.

It was an 084 number and no wonder I was kept in the queue for an awful long time.

You live and learn. Don't make the same mistake!

HMRC numbers have been 03 numbers for some time. Where did you get the 084 number from?

All seem to be 0300 numbers, with geographic alternatives provided.

We have recently noticed an 0844 !!!8216;HMRC helpline!!!8217; number being advertised on the internet, which is not a real HMRC helpline number. Calling it will get you through to HMRC !!!8211; but possibly at an inflated price. We urge caution for anyone searching for HMRC numbers online

Any premium rate telephone numbers starting 084, 087 or 09 found online for contacting DWP, HMRC, etc are fake. This is known as the "call connection service" scam.

There's a thread here on MSE warning about the scam. It can be found here: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/5639282/what-is-a-call-connection-service-be-aware-and-then-avoid

Yesterday (26 July 2018), Ofcom published a consultation proposing to change the rules such that call connection services operating on 084 numbers will be defined as Controlled Premium Rate Services (CPRS) and thereby covered by PSA (Phone-paid Services Authority) regulations. Services operating on 087 and 09 numbers are already covered by PSA's strict requirements, known as Special Conditions.

In the meantime, the website promoting the fake 084 number should be reported to ASA (Advertising Standards Authority) as being misleading.
