You are assuming Santander run their systems in real-time which they don't

very few of the old Legacy banks do this it is only when you get to the new Challenger banks such as monzo starling etc that their system is running real time and can instantly notify you of changes to your account

Santander probably run their notification system as batch processes that runs at various times during the day and night.

They make no secret of the fact that they are not instant.

I have a Barclays account and sometimes notifications will come very quickly other times the next morning. it's got nothing to do with the text or email network ii is just dependent on when they get round to running the various programs that support this function
  • I have notification setup at Lloyds and Nationwide and always get them on the day, when certain event occurs. Nationwide usually sends texts after 8.00am.

I would officially complain to Santander anyway.

As we all know, interest rates are low and likely to remain so for some time. Keeping £100 in a current account that pays no interest rather than in a good instant access savings account paying 1.5% will cost only £1.50 a year. So why not just keep enough extra in your current account to make sure you cover DDs, rather than moving just enough in at the last minute (or possibly too late)?

Better still, why not use a current account that pays some interest, even if not as much as 1.5%? Just as one example, Nationwide FlexDirect pays 1% on up to £2,500 (even after the introductory first year at 5%), so keeping each extra £100 in there "costs" just 50p per year!

Playing "just in time" (or "just too late") and then trying to blame the bank is a mug's game.

Well, I have to say I feel slightly vindicated that my complaint to Santander over a year ago wasn't as pointless as some people said it was! Hopefully I'll be able to get a refund.
