Apple ID questions

Howdy !
When I purchased all of my various Apple products over the years , my user ID has always been the BT internet email address .
I have always had a gmail account , and will explain that later.
In November 2016 I left BT when I moved home ,and still use my gmail address for pretty much everything . My broadband is with Vodafone ,but I didn't bother using that email address yet as I was still settling into a new life pattern and moved home to my present abode.
When I bought my new iMac on Black Friday of november last year , I got an iTunes voucher ( electronically of course), sent to my Bt address. I managed to get Apple to send that to my g mail address.
However, Apple say that they cannot update my Apple ID to my gmail address .
Questions : Is this because gmail is a free email service and that Vodafone's / BT would prove my identity so to speak ?
Also, Is it better for me to have more than the one email address (gmail) that I have ?
Thanks

2. You can have as many or as few email addresses as you like. Gmail (you can have more than 1) has a good spam filter (in my opinion) and if you're worried about security enable 2-factor authentication.
