RE: animal testing and cosmetics

Hi
my daughter wants to go through her vast collection of cosmetics and chuck out any that have been tested on animals and then make sure she never again buys from companies that do test on animals.

Its proving very hard to sort out who does what. Does anyone know of a definitive list of companies that have definitely not had their products tested on animals?
Thanks.

  • They usually boast about this sort of thing on the packaging. Something like "ABC plc does not use or support animal testing on any of its products (so please don't put home-made bombs under our employees' cars or complain if it removes your epidermis)."

You also need to be aware that some that do not test products on animals, may however not guarantee that the ingredients are not tested on animals! x
    Gone ... or have I?
  • Beauty Without Cruelty would seem the most obvious choice. I am sure there are others that don't test the finished product but some will test the individual items instead.

Maybe I'm mistaken but I thought ALL testing of cosmetics on animals in the uk has been banned.

However all the ingredients are likely to have, at one point been tested on animals.

The body shop has always promoted its anti-testing stance, and their make up is quite good.
  • Lynne you are right in terms of it happening in the UK, ingredients will continue to be tested though.. I found this below which explains the situation.

When will the law be changed?
The UK banned animal testing for cosmetics in 1998 and in November 2002 the EU voted to ban animal testing for cosmetics to come into force from around 2009. Until then, animal testing for cosmetics will continue around the world, so 'ethical consumers' still need to be vigilant when it comes to avoiding animal tested cosmetics. Changing the law to provide greater protection for laboratory animals is a very slow process - it has taken the EU 13 years to finally resolve the cosmetics animal testing debate, and countries such as the USA and Japan are a long way from ending animal testing for cosmetics.

    I've been Money Tipped!
The Body Shop is now owned by L'Oreal, who still continue to test on animals, so it depends how far you want to take it.

Any product that is approved by BUAV (British Union Against Vivisection) against the Humane Cosmetic Standard (in Europe) carries the 'leaping bunny' logo:

This is PETA's (People for The Ethical Treatment of Animals) approved list:

Remember, most other products such as toothpaste, mouthwash, soap, body lotions etc are also tested on animals, as are the majority of cleaning products.
  • This site by PETA my interest your daughter:

The biggest company to avoid is Proctor and Gamble. I am slowly switching all my products when they have ran out. The things that this company and others do to animals is dreadful.

Well done to your daughter for taking such a great step to aviod contributing to animal cruelty.

  • I noticed e.l.f on the peta site and a quick ebay search shows them available for under £2 here too.
