Repainting old outside wood advice needed

Not a DIY person really but have a wooden garden shed door and wooden garden gate that need repainting.
The paint on the door is not flaking it's just faded with the sun. Do I have to sand it down and apply undercoat and then repaint it or would just painting be ok?
The gate is worse as the paint is flaking and wood underneath exposed. I've sanded off the loosest parts so it looks a bit like camouflage with 50/50 areas of unpainted wood and painted wood. Can I just undercoat this and paint over that?
Also how many coats of each paint in each case?

I would just lightly sand it down and repaint it with your choice of colour, if it differs greatly from the colour you have at the moment you may need an undercoat.0

I think you already have the right idea.
Get rid of all loose paint, lightly sand down to provide the paint a key and crack on.0 -
I have done this on an old conservatory and my wooden window frames at home - I scraped off the loose flaky bits of paint, sanded down the bits that were left so they were not very "ridgey" , I primed the wood and then 2 coats of gloss.
I worked with an old duvet cover on the floor to avoid splashes and also masked off anything I wasn't supposed to paint!!
It has been worth putting in the effort because I want them to last a while!0
