Check out Happy Energy as there might be a grant available to renew such an old boiler http://happyenergy.co.uk/funding/

If they can't help then your local Council will know if there is a scheme for funding in your area.

Thank you all for your suggestions, ideas and helpful comments.
The neighbour's son turned up for a surprise visit yesterday as its her birthday this weekend and he has taken on the task of getting the boiler repaired or replaced.
I have passed on the comments on this thread in the hope that they will help.
Once again thank you all that took the time to reply.

I am sure this is just the type of thing they can advise on
