Stop someone from obtaning credit

I'm not sure if this is the right forum, however I was wondering is there a way of stopping someone from obtaining credit/bank accounts. My husband is a problem gambler and no matter what damage he does to his credit file people still keep lending him money. He has circa £30k debt against his name and 11 default notices yet credit card, loan companies and banks keep giving him access. I was wondering if there was something that could be done to block this? Also is there a way of raising an issue with the companies that have allowed him to continuously rack up so much debt when he is clearly using it to gamble? One credit card suspended his account until balance was paid off and then reopened it for him to do it all again. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

The best option would be to sort out the problem at the source and get help for your husband and also get him permanently excluded from every betting website/shop.

Even if you did manage to stop him having access to any credit/bank accounts himself, what would stop him from taking out accounts in your name/family members name or spending every penny whenever he is paid.
  • Thank you. This has been a 3yr battle in which we have already done all of the above, online banning, contacted each one, blocking apps, in-store banning, doctors, meetings, hospital appointments. He doesn't have a bank account (closed the most recent) and all wages have been paid to me for the last 3yrs so the access to credit for last 3yrs has been via credit. Thank you anyway.

You might want to have a look at CIFAS Protecting the Vulnerable to see if a marker could prevent credit being offered.

  • Thank you. I will look into it.

I mean this very sincerely but I know how things come across in just words on the internet; but have you ever thought of leaving him? Or a temporary separation maybe?

Just thinking it might be a bit of a wake up call if he sees you wont put up with it forever xx
  • Thank you. This has also been attempted for 2 weeks but this made the problem worse.

who cleared the debts off? What financial connections do you have? What assets does he have?
  • No-one cleared the debts, they are being handled by a debt charity and he has no assets. That's why I am wondering why companies keep lending. We've taken some new measures and gone back to treatment so I am hoping that will work as I think Takman had a point and that even if I block the credit reference, he'll do it some other way.
