Famously without limits for large sections, but there are loads of speed limits (marked by tiny signs) around junctions and towns. These are a variety of 130,120 and 100km/h.

These are very strictly monitored - so make sure you adhere to them.

I missed one, and got a ticket sent to the UK. In proper German style it was complete with picture of the car, picture of my face (!), thorough details and English translation.

There are also minimum distance from the car in front enforcement cameras. Something my brother in law told me was impossible until he himself got caught outside Munich.

Should have worn a mask when passing them ;)

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

  • I got flashed at 180kmh in a 120kmh limit driving a hire car I had just picked up from Munich airport, I got a bill from the hire car company for passing on my details, but never got an actual fine.
If it comes now, I'll be ignoring it. My friend has had a few & never paid them.

Which is all good unless you are back in Germany and get stopped for some other matter.....

Most likely the hire car company will just pay the fine and debit your card; simples.

This takes me back! We hired a Smart Cabriolet from Salzburg, which turned out to be a 1.7 Diesel Astra Estate (same class...apparently). Got to the Autobahn and as soon as we passed the no restriction sign an A8 came past so fast that our car rocked violently! About 5KM later we saw it in a field upside down, steaming! The driver stood smoking a cigarette!

I have opinions, you have opinions. All of our opinions are valid whether they are based on fact or feeling. Respect other peoples opinions, stop forcing your opinions on other people and the world will be a happier place.

Bloody Nora you could have fooled me. I collected so many Audis, Beemers and Mercs on my !!! I felt like I had sat on a big Teutonic porcupine.

And yes although I didn't partake in the Audi-bashing on a different thread, the Audis are driven in the most aggressive way in their fatherland.

That's the thing, just because there is no speed limit, it doesn't mean it is physically possible to get round all the bends any any speed.
