Are Admiral reasonable here.

Options
I have rang Admiral to cancel my annual car insurance and was told that the money will go back to the payment card that I have used 4 months ago minus £50 cancelation fee.

I have replied that the card I have paid with has been cancelled and have asked to be refunded via any other reasonable way.

They have declined and said due to money laundering they can only refund to original card.

To me this is total nonsense I can not see where would be any money laundering risk risk involved if they sent me a cheque or transefrred the money to my bank account.

Instead they said they would need to wait to receive a notification from the card provider that the card is closed.

I would then need to telephone Admiral who would provide me with some code that I would need to provide to credit card people so they could release my money.

I am seeing this as as Admiral being too difficult for no apparent reason whci will mean I will have to waste time on multiple phone calls and have substantial delay in getting my money back.

Is this normal? Is it worth a complaint?

    Is this normal?

Yes it is normal. A lot of companies do the same.
    Is it worth a complaint?

I don't think so. You may disagree. How long is it going to take to get the information they asked for? I imagine that will be quicker than going through Admiral's complaint process.

Sending a cheque payable to the name of their policyholder who paid the premium would in no way breach the money laundering rules.

The problem you have is they are set up to process refunds via card, raising a refund cheque will involve admin for them and will cost them I would guess upwards of £20. This is why they are feeding you the BS.

If you want a refund via cheque, send them an "Official Complaint" they are duty bound to properly investigate the matter and it is dealt with by more senior staff.

To achieve the best results, keep the letter polite and concise

The "official complaint" could take a couple of weeks and they may not be competent and so fob you off.

Whereas, complying with their requests could result in a quicker refund.
