Driving an automatic car with a walking boot after breaking left ankle

Hi

I wanted to know if it is ok (legally and be covered by insurance) to drive an automatic car while wearing an Aircast Boot on the left leg. My left leg is not used at all.

I had broken my tibia and fibula one and a half months ago, been in a cast for 6 weeks. Had the cast taken off and given an Aircast Boot to wear for 6 weeks. The Aircast boot is to protect the ankle when walking. I have been given permission to start putting weight on it and to start physio.

At the last appointment, I clarified that the doctor has not put any restrictions on me for driving, and when I asked the doctor she said as long as you have full control of the car, its ok to drive.

I have emailed the NHS to get that in writing (but as you can imagine this can take really long to get a reply.

Any insight into this would be great.

Thanks

X

So don't you think the underwriters have the final say irrespective of what a bunch of internet strangers may write?

I had the same issue in Jan, well not a boot but I broke my tib/fib in Oct.

I called my insurers, and they said as long as my doctor is ok then they dont need to know. They didnt put any notes on my account or anything.

That was my right leg and I drive a manual.

I practised by going round a car park at slow speed to ensure I could put enough weight on the pedals, and said to my doctor and he was happy with that.

Call your insurers and tell them what you have told us, and see what they say

    Hey Thanks

I just got an email back from the doctor who looks after my case, and now I have it in writing that I have no restrictions on driving from them.

I will email the insurance company too.
