00:09 06May09 MARKET TALK: UK Consumer Showing Signs Of Life - Nationwide
2309 GMT Signs of life in the British consumer seem to be nudging GBP/USD a bit higher in Asia, with Nationwide Building Society saying its measure of consumer confidence rose to 50 in April vs 42 in March, buoyed by less downbeat assessment of outlook for economy and jobs market next six months; this suggests consumers believe measures taken by government, BoE to support economy will work, and indicates they won't cut back on spending as sharply as many economists had expected. Nationwide says 26% of those surveyed believe economy will be better in six months' time, up from 19% in March, while 32% believe economy will be in worse shape, vs 41% in March. Still, survey took place before government presented its April budget; Chancellor of Exchequer Darling then said he expects economy to shrink 3.5% this year, having previously forecast it would shrink 1%. And in another reminder that all is not rosy, National Institute of Economic and Social Research says UK economy is likely to contract 4.3% this year; calls discussion of green shoots of recovery "rather premature," with recession's duration likely similar to 1930s, 1980s. In other data just out, April shop price inflation eased, says British Retail consortium. Please take the time to have a look around my Daughter's website www.daisypalmertrust.co.uk

09:17 06May09 UK Halifax Apr House Prices -1.7% MM, -17.7% YY
LONDON - U.K. house prices fell in April both on the month earlier
and year-earlier period, lender Lloyds Banking Group said Wednesday.
According to HBOS, now owned by Lloyds, the Halifax house price index
declined 1.7% from March and was 17.7% lower than a year earlier. That compares
with a 1.9% month-on-month fall in March and a drop of 17.5% on the year.
Economists surveyed by dow Jones Newswires had forecast the index would fall
0.9% on the month and 17.6% on the year.
"Rising unemployment, low consumer confidence and the reduced availability of
credit are all expected to exert downward pressure on the housing market over the
next few months," said Martin Ellis, Halifax's housing economist. "As a result,
further house price declines are likely," he said.
The data follow the U.K.'s largest lender Nationwide's April house price
survey last week which reported a 0.4% monthly drop. Please take the time to have a look around my Daughter's website www.daisypalmertrust.co.uk
