has just plumbed a fresh intra-day low of 1.4628 after breaking below 1.4637
(today"s Asian session base), as the pound continues to suffer on the back the
back of a Daily Telegraph article headlined "Borrowing puts UK"s AAA rating in
danger" (B5). 1.4720 was today"s early Asian session high.
1.4600 (yesterday"s early Europe high) and 1.4543 (Wednesday"s post-UK budget
recovery rally high) are sterling support points. Buy stops above 1.4600 were
tripped ahead of yesterday"s 15:00GMT London fix. Buy stops above 1.4700 were

"Is the UK once again the economic sick man?" is the headline of an article
by Martin Wolf in the FT today. This highlights the IMF"s forecast that the UK
economy will contract by 4.1% this year and 0.4% next year. UK Chancellor
Alistair Darling forecasts that the UK economy will contract by a more modest
3.5% this year, before rising by 1.25% next year.
The preliminary ONS estimate of UK Q1 GDP will be unveiled at 08:30GMT,
alongside ONS March UK retail sales figures. A 1.5% GDP contraction is forecast,
to follow a 1.6% fall in Q4 2008. Retail sales are forecast down 0.5% m/m

08:15 24Apr09 MARKET TALK: GBP Should Still Fly
0715 GMT Alistair Darling may have clipped the GBP's wings but the UK
currency should still fly, according to Forex Focus by Nicholas Hastings. There
are already signs that the selling pressure on GBP is abating with investors
remaining confident that the UK will recover sooner than many of its competitors.
