re post #6 - we had a number of calls of the "boiler room" type about 6-8 years ago - it appeared that the "investment" advisers had got hold of a share register for Mitchells and Butlers. Both myself and my wife had shares with the pub group at the time.
Believe it got investigated by City of London Police; no calls of that type since:T

Should have recorded the conversation and posted it on YouTube - would have earned you a few pennies.

I do like it when you scam the scammers.

How would they know it's XP?
Yes fair comment, and people with newer operating systems are getting them too. I was perhaps taking too much notice of Microsoft and others trying to sell me updated/extra software etc for security. I tried Windows 10  and went back to XP. :) Can't teach old dog new tricks etc :o

They are using data-bases of phone numbers and names.
yes, when I have the time I like to wind them up by telling them they have been scammed - whoever sold them a sucker's list with my name on it has taken them fore a mug and ripped them off :rotfl:

You can wind them up, but they can get nasty and make horrible threats.
After one caller became nasty with me, it occurred to me that they could retaliate simply by making nuisance calls during the night. Now I play "polite but doddery" so they'll think that it's my incompetence that has eventually cut them off.

Agreed, but if they're waiting for my computer to start-up, that's time when they're not bothering someone else.

:D Do you think there's like a meta-suckers list, with the details of people who are likely to buy up lists of names and phone numbers?

If you play along with them your name is likely to get ranked up the list in priority as someone who actually engages with a caller as opposed to just putting the phone down so this will probably end up in you getting more calls....
