I went down the Motability route. High rate mobility component of DLA or PIP pays for this. I did have a look at doing it myself but it was a bit of a minefield for what I required. Did manage to find a couple of firms that would do the adaptions I required. Did find an insurance broker who said it should be doable. Didn't look any further down this route.

First thing I did was get a proper assessment. Various assessment firms spread around the country depending on where you live.
    I used these people.

Spoke to Motability in the first instance. Can't remember whether they booked the assessment or I did. Motability ended up paying for it although I may have paid initially, then claimed it back. Assessment took little over an hour, part Q & A's about my disability, part driving an adapted car on their private land. About a week later received assessment report which was sent to Motability. Went to dealer and picked the car I wanted. Car picked up 2-3 months later with adaptions fitted. In the meantime I took a couple of lessons With a driving instructor with similar adaptions to mine for familiarity.
Claimed lesson money back from Motability.

Whole process was very straight forward and was guided by Motability and dealer all the way. Most (all?) large dealers have Motabiity trained staff.

The above is all dependant on the higher rate DLA/PIP mobility award.

Package includes everything except petrol. I also put my own screenwash in.

I didn't go down the 'motability' route when I needed an adapted car. I went along to a disabled driving assessment centre in Rookwood Hospital Cardiff - they assessed me, and then told me what adaptions I needed.

One part of the assessments was in a driving simulater fitted with the adaption and they also assess reactions and braking! They then took me out in an adapted car and I drove for around 30 mins on the roads.

I bought a second hand car and had the adaptions fitted in a specialist centre that fit the adaptions. When I had the assessment they wrote a report about my assessment, what adaptions were needed. One report sent to the DVLA and a copy for myself. They also advised on what vehicle would be suitable.

If your friend receives DLA or PIP, they wont have to pay for the assessment.
