Free AVG anti-virus expiring?

Hi there, I've had AVG 7.5 on my computer since last year, and have just started getting the 'licence expiring in ... days, visit our website to purchase ...' message. Do you have to buy a package after the first year? I thought it was a free product? Should I buy? My computer is XP.
