Many thanks to all posters, I have resolved (at least partially) the issue to a point where I can work around it - never totally satisfactory - but at least I can reconcile the information from Fidelity (other investment providers are available) with that from M$Money.
It seems that Money deals with selling shares to pay for fees differently to Fidelity (Money adjusts the cost basis but Fidelity doesn't) and, despite many phone conversations with Fidelity, they are not going to change their methods or website.
My way round it is to create an Excel spreadsheet which has all the information (without the detail) and which I can use to calculate the returns based on both M$Money's way and Fidelity's way of dealing with shares sold for fees. I can calculate my return based on my actual investment and see that it reconciles EXACTLY with the figure provided by Fidelity.
The other thing I have done (after conferring with Fidelity) is to agree to keep a small cash balance in my account from which fees can be paid, so I never have to sell shares to pay fees again. If only I had done this from the beginning. Unfortunately hindsight was on back order when I set up my Fidelity account!0
