Soundproofing a party wall for TV

After redecorating our bedroom, my wife feels the TV would be best mounted on the wall instead of sitting on top of the fitted drawers in the bedroom. The problem is that the wall is the party wall with the neighbour and her bedroom is on the other side.

Our current TV is a bit old and has forward facing speakers, so I imagine sound transmission will be a bit less, but eventually we will upgrade the TV and nowadays the speakers are rear-facing.

I don't really want to have to install a false wall after having spent the last two weekends painting the bedroom.

Any suggestions or solutions would be welcome.

  • If you're worried about sound transmission - don't put the TV on the wall.

There is no MSE/simple soundproofing solution. Sound can transmit through the wall, the ceiling and the floor. A false wall would only be the start of a soundproofing solution.

Mount the TV on the wall and be considerate of the volume level. People don't tend to use their bedrooms during the day too much unless they are night workers so unlikely to be an issue as long as you don't have it on crazy loud and simply keep the volume right down at night (or use headphones).

It's not MSE but I was thinking about sandwiching dynamat between the wall and the mount to help. TBH it's really only for the wife as I tend to use streaming services, whereas the missus wants to watch Love Island. Volume is normally low anyway.

More side facing from what I have seen. However, also a pile of !!!!! since there is no room for them. I guess some may be rear mounting but at wafer thin they are also !!!!!.

So in other news. The cost of a usable TV not includes a soundbar (other speaker solutions are available). Be sure to factor it in and worry less about soundproofing!

Get that sound bar and place it where you want ( attaching the sound bar will disable those tiny rear facing ones). No need for any soundproofing.

Your in a semi/terrace. You have to consider the neighbors, and with respect your wife is not considering them. Not fair that the neighbors have to hear your tv when they might want to be sleeping.

When I had my tv in the bedroom of a semi, I had my setup on the other side of the room. At 10pm I would use headphones. This was because the neighbors were sleeping and had to get up early. In turn, they would always consider me.
  • Bluetooth speakers / soundbar by the bed ?
Slightly off kilter , but you can even get Bluetooth mattresses :)
Not sure if you can get Bluetooth pillows though .
Another possibility could be to get an extn cord which goes from the tv into a soundbar where yo could place that nearer your bed and away from the party wall.

By all means , place the tv on the wall if you want to . Just make sure you don't use the tv speakers or anything on that wall.

Moot point. Wife has decided that we should have fitted wardrobes along that wall and mounting a TV only to remove it later is a waste of time. FWIW I'd have gone down the route of a bluetooth speaker (especially as I already have a Beats Pill).

thanks to all for their input.
